But I've always felt that this prayer wasn't enough. It left me wanting to say and do more. For a long time I couldn't really way how or why, but every year I've said this prayer and felt incomplete afterwards.
This spring, I decided Al Chet needed some kind of response. After a week, I had a new song, based on the melody I wrote for Selichot, with lyrics that provide a personal answer to "what comes next?"
Because unless we take these prayers into ourselves and personalize them, try to figure out where we want them to lead us, they're just words. Following the prayer down a particular path helps make it real.
